{"id":779469,"date":"2023-05-19T11:02:51","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T15:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/?p=779469"},"modified":"2023-05-31T12:12:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T16:12:13","slug":"rhyne-howard-slam-244","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/the-magazine\/rhyne-howard-slam-244\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlanta Dream&#8217;s Rhyne Howard is Going to be a Nightmare in the WNBA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A few days prior to being interviewed by SLAM, Rhyne Howard was in Italy, hitting big shot after big shot as her international club, Beretta Famila Schio, grabbed the EuroLeague crown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo finally be able to call myself a champion after nine long months there [means a lot],\u201d says Howard, who\u2019s basking in a rare break between seasons, Jordan Brand promos and her other commitments. \u201cAll that hard work that we put in. Also, being a champion meant that it was time to come home. Get your copy of SLAM 244.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To better its chances of seeing the postseason for the first time since 2018, Atlanta went out and got Allisha Gray from Dallas. The team also selected Stanford star Haley Jones and South Carolina forward Laeticia Amihere in the 2023 WNBA Draft. With the revamped roster, Howard sees the Dream\u2019s future starting to take shape. \u201cA lot of people are still questioning if we have enough [talent] or if we have that chemistry,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I\u2019m definitely excited about what we have in store.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does anybody have some gum? The images of Howard spinning a ball on her finger at the SLAM photo shoot are dope, but something\u2019s still a little bit off. Rhyne\u2019s mom, Rhvonja \u201cRJ\u201d Avery, says it\u2019s gum that\u2019s missing. Rhyne loves blowing bubbles when she spins. Someone finds the Dream star a few pieces of Bubblicious. The pics immediately start poppin\u2019. But you\u2019d never know it based off an on-court persona that comes off stoic and standoffish to some. Yeah, she\u2019ll give you the Griddy on TikTok, but you won\u2019t get much else during a game. \u201cSay less, play more\u201d has long been her MO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just because Howard doesn\u2019t flex on \u2019em doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019s without emotion. \u201cShe comes off as very shy, but the kid is not shy,\u201d says second-year Atlanta Dream head coach Tanisha Wright. \u201cShe has a funniness and humor about her that\u2019s pretty cool. She\u2019s not loud and she\u2019s not boisterous, but she has a quiet competitiveness that comes out when it needs to come out at game time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Howard hears of her coach\u2019s comments, she adds, \u201cI am shy. It affects how [people] talk to me. They\u2019ll be scared to come up to me. I\u2019m very open. I will talk to you. I won\u2019t speak first, but I\u2019ll have a conversation with you. I\u2019ll joke and laugh. But I am going to feel you out a little bit just to see. Avery certainly knew way back in the day when Howard was hooping as a child. When the other kids were frantically doing jumping jacks in front of the inbound passer, Rhyne\u2019s mom was watching her daughter patiently scan the scene, looking to see how she could make a steal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen she was 7, we were living in Virginia,\u201d says Avery. \u201cI was watching her play in a co-ed rec league. She\u2019s already surveyed everything, trying to be one-up on [the opponent]. You can\u2019t teach that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time Howard was in eighth grade and living in Cleveland, TN, she was good enough to be on the high school varsity team. The squad\u2019s first game of the season was the same night as the eighth-grade dance. Howard skipped the formal to suit up for the game. Even though she never put on a dress, she was still named queen of the dance. She didn\u2019t have to make a choice between playing ball and going to one in high school. Different times of the year. She went to the prom. Won queen again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slamgoods.com\/collections\/new-arrivals\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4-720x900.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4-864x1080.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/26-4-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Purdue, South Carolina and Florida (where Avery herself once played) were attractive options for Howard\u2019s next stop, Kentucky just felt different. Like her mom said, \u201cIt was far enough away, but not too far from home. It was a great fit for her because she could go in and make her mark.\u201d With then-UK women\u2019s head coach Matthew Mitchell at the helm, the locker room had a familial feel, too. Howard dug that. The Wildcats went 84-37 with three NCAA Tournament appearances while she was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was at Lexington where Howard also befriended Terrence Clarke, the talented shooting guard out of Massachusetts. The two hit it off instantly. \u201cWhen a men\u2019s player comes to Kentucky,\u201d Howard explains, \u201cmost likely they\u2019re going to be one and done. They\u2019re not going to have a lot of time and not going to have a lot of friends to hang out with. The first time I met [Clarke] was actually in the training room. He came in singin\u2019 and stuff. I was like, Keep going. Go ahead. He actually ended up telling me that I was one of the first people besides his teammates to actually talk to him and be his friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Howard continues, \u201cThey were having a rough season at the time. We were having a rough season. We would just go to the mall and just hang out and be there for each other and just talk and figure out what\u2019s going on. Just being that ear, being that friend that we both needed.\u201d She was big sis. He was lil\u2019 bro.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40-720x900.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40-864x1080.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/40-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarke tragically passed away in April 2021 in a car accident only a few months before the NBA Draft. \u201cIt really hit hard when he was gone,\u201d says Howard. \u201cBut I keep him alive when I play. I keep him alive all the time. I talk to his mom, too, just to check in on her. I\u2019m actually going to send her this jersey and this magazine when it comes out. Just being able to have him as a part of my life, even for just a short amount of time, was a blessing. I wish everybody could find somebody like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slamgoods.com\/collections\/new-arrivals\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2-864x1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2-864x1080.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2-720x900.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/43-2.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With her rookie season over and the franchise\u2019s future in her hands, Howard knows that her voice may need to get louder in team huddles. Jones and Amihere are certainly going to lean on her for first-year guidance. Just about everybody in the Dream\u2019s Gateway Center Arena will be depending on No. 10 when the team is down in crunch time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt makes your life easier as a coach because you know you have a player that\u2019s capable of doing things that can help you win basketball games,\u201d Wright says about Howard, who scored 20+ on 11 occasions her rookie year. \u201cShe definitely makes my life easier. But at times, you rely on her and you forget that you\u2019re a team. That\u2019s always an important piece that you have to keep in mind. We can\u2019t just wait around and watch her go to work. We have to do it as a collective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One area where Coach Wright will be watching Howard more is on defense. An SEC All-Defensive Team member in 2020 and top five in the WNBA in steals a year ago, Howard can be a dawg on that end, too. \u201cI\u2019d love to see her utilize more of her tools,\u201d says Wright. \u201cShe\u2019s gotta expect more from herself on that side. She\u2019s capable of doing much more than just catching and shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Howard agrees. \u201c[Playing] overseas showed that I can be way more active than what I have been,\u201d she says. \u201cFor the most part, I just use my length and my IQ to get a steal or get in the passing lane. But overseas, I was actually guarding the other team\u2019s best player and doing a pretty good job, if I have to say so myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slamgoods.com\/collections\/new-arrivals\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4-720x900.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4-864x1080.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-4-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother takes things a step further. \u201cShe actually set her sights on doing what Candace Parker did,\u201d says Avery, alluding to Parker\u2019s ridiculous \u201908 rookie campaign where she won almost every conceivable award, including League MVP. \u201cI think she could be on that path to exceed Candace Parker and Breanna Stewart. She loves all of them, but she\u2019s so competitive that she\u2019s going to work to compete and be better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This whole magazine is dedicated to what\u2019s next in the sport, right? When this generational talent gets her defensive game to match one of the most complete offensive packages in the League, mark our words: The future looks bright for the Dream and downright nightmarish for the rest of the WNBA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to continue being that dog on the court that everyone says I am,\u201d she says. \u201cContinue to take accountability and have that consistency that I\u2019ve been having.
