Get your copy now.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most successful streetball teams in New York City\u2014year after year after year\u2014is the Sean Bell All-Stars, coached by Jamaica, Queens, native Raheem \u201cRah\u201d Wiggins. A decorated new short film, <em>Bring Your Name<\/em>, reminds viewers of the story behind the team\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sean Bell was a former high school baseball star from Queens celebrating his impending marriage in November, 2006, when he was shot by plain-clothes police officers. He died that night at age 23. Wiggins was a childhood friend of Bell\u2019s who had been inspired to become a basketball coach by New York-area legends Jimmy Salmon and Tiny Morton. Wiggins was already entering streetball tournaments under the team name DDN (Dat\u2019s Dem N\u2014s), but he renamed the squad in honor of his fallen friend. And the team\u2014not a high school AAU squad but a collection of adults, often with pro experience like Lance Stephenson or Tyshawn Taylor\u2014has been a powerhouse ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-815674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1-1620x1080.jpg 1620w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Untitled-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the best team in the city,\u201d Wiggins says in the film, which takes you up close and personal to a game at Brooklyn\u2019s Gersh Park. \u201cPeople ask when I\u2019m gonna walk away? As long as when I lose, people make a big deal out of it, I gotta come back.\u201d He adds later, of the significance of the team\u2019s name: \u201cThat\u2019s my job, to keep [Sean\u2019s] name to the public ear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bring Your Name<\/em> is directed by Raafi Rivero, the filmmaker and artist behind the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/bringyourname.unarmed.co\">Unarmed project<\/a>, which exists \u201cin memoriam of Black victims of police violence.\u201d Rivero also worked on an upcoming docuseries around the 2024 NBA postseason that will air on ESPN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/bringyourname.unarmed.co\">Bring Your Name<\/a><\/em> will make its world premiere at the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia in August. From there, Rivero hopes to screen it at playground basketball venues in New York City as well as at other film festivals.
