{"id":816407,"date":"2024-09-25T14:01:01","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T18:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/?p=816407"},"modified":"2024-09-25T16:10:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T20:10:45","slug":"hoop-dreams-30th-anniversary-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/the-magazine\/hoop-dreams-30th-anniversary-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoop Dreams: The Iconic Basketball Documentary Remains as Powerful as Ever 30 Years Later"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the opinions of the two most famous film critics in the country in 1994, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert of <em>Siskel &amp; Ebert<\/em> fame, not to mention a number of their colleagues at other media outlets, the best film of 1994 was\u2026a documentary about two high school hoopers from Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re a longtime basketball junkie who already knows everything there is to know about <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em>, the cinematic masterpiece about Arthur Agee, William Gates and their families, or a young buck just learning about the film for the first time, you have to understand how utterly improbable it was that the <em>single best movie<\/em> of any year was a basketball doc. Quadruply so back in \u201994, when there was no such thing as <em>30 for 30<\/em> and you were lucky if you found a documentary on any subject anywhere other than PBS. In fact, filmmakers Steve James and Frederick Marx originally set out to make a 30-minute piece they hoped would make it to PBS and on the back end, well, there\u2019d be no such thing as <em>30 for 30<\/em> if <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> didn\u2019t show the world how powerful a documentary rooted in sports could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"1448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-816422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams-597x900.jpg 597w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams-716x1080.jpg 716w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.slamonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Hoop-Dreams-768x1158.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was no short-lived phenomenon, either. <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> has appeared in numerous lists of the greatest documentaries of all time and tends to be passed down from one generation to another in basketball families like a treasured heirloom. \u201cI think the biggest impact is knowing folks in my generation are watching with their kids. I just saw a clip of Carmelo Anthony saying <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> is a film his son needs to watch,\u201d says Gates, who during the film commutes 90 minutes from the Cabrini-Green Homes in Chicago out to the private St. Joseph High School in Westchester and eventually overcomes a knee injury to earn a scholarship to Marquette. \u201cAt the core of it, the film is as relevant today as it was then because the issues still remain\u2026You\u2019ve still got kids who have the dream of making the League, and there\u2019s two elements of the story. There\u2019s injuries, there\u2019s grades, there\u2019s lack of opportunities. These issues still exist. Just change the faces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says James, who directed <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> as his first major project and subsequently worked on numerous successful films with Chicago-based Kartemquin Films, \u201cI\u2019m shocked and surprised how many people still talk about it. It\u2019s not every day, but I do get approached about <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> a lot. Gilbert has also gone on to produce many movies and remains prolific to this day\u2014but nothing has hit quite like <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an interesting thing. I\u2019ve made 30 or 40 other films, including one about the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Innocence Project films about people who were wrongly convicted, all different kinds of stuff, as well as narrative stuff,\u201d Gilbert says. \u201cBut <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> is the thing that people define me by. He also teams up with Gates on <em>Agee and Gates The Podcast: What\u2019s your <\/em>Hoop Dream? Asked over text if <em>Hoop Dreams<\/em> feels like a daily part of his life all these years later, Agee doesn\u2019t hesitate. \u201cIt\u2019s never ending, it\u2019s always there no matter where I\u2019m at,\u201d he types back quickly. \u201cIt\u2019s just a real cool thing to live every day.\u201d Dreams are real, indeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>SLAM has and would celebrate a film such as Hoop Dreams no matter how old we or the film might be, but there\u2019s special resonance that the movie is turning 30 this year just as we are. In February, we brought the guys together at the first annual SLAM Film Festival to celebrate the 30th anniversary, which kicked off a year-long celebration of the film. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/drafthouse.com\/show\/hoop-dreams\">Alamo Drafthouse<\/a> will be\u00a0re-releasing the film in theaters this week\u00a0as part of their 1994 look back series, Project Backboard is refurbishing the court at Garfield Park on Chicago\u2019s West Side as part of JDS Sports\u2019 Play With Purpose initiative, with a court unveiling this weekend, and SLAM will be dropping a capsule collection this Friday.
